By in Homeowner Safety with 0 Comments

Here in SWMO, you never know what you’re going to get where the weather is concerned. Each season is beautiful in its own way! Whether you are a winter person or not, the fact is that it’s here, and it’s better to be prepared. So, if you are rooting for some snow this winter (and even if you’re not), make sure you look over this list to get you, your family, and your home ready for what winter may throw at us.

  1. Trim overhanging tree limbs that can break and cause damage to your home or other structures.
  2. Cover your outdoor faucets to prevent them from freezing, causing the pipes to rupture. Remember to remove the hose first. And don’t forget to pay attention to your frost-free spigots as well. While they should be less likely to cause problems, they aren’t completely immune to harsh temperatures.
  3. Insulate your pipes to prevent them from becoming frozen and causing water damage. Wrap them up for an extra layer of protection. Also consider turning on your inside faucets to a small drip. And one extra simple step would be to leave your cabinet doors open to allow the warm air in your home to circulate around the pipes.
  4. If you feel a draft around your windows or a cool breeze around your closed door, time to get some caulk and/or weather stripping. Doing so can keep the cold air out and help keep your heating bill down.
  5. Think ahead about your source(s) of heating. Do you need a back-up plan in case you lose electricity? Generators are a way to keep things going in a somewhat normal way during a loss of electricity. If you have a wood stove or fireplace, make sure you are stocked up on extra wood. If you have propane heat, get that tank filled up just in case.
  6. Do a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector test to make sure yours are in working order. During prolonged stretches of bitter cold or power outages, it’s imperative to have your detectors ready. Do your checks and make sure you have new batteries. Keeping you and your family safe is the #1 priority!
  7. Consider purchasing some ice melt for those paths, driveways, and outdoor stairs.
  8. Make a list of all the supplies you might need in the event of a larger winter storm. Think about your family and your animals! If you lose power, your list of needs might vary a bit. Here are some ideas for you to consider adding to your list:

    – Food (Think about your cooking options in case you lose electricity).
    – Water
    – Warm clothes (Don’t forget hats, gloves, blankets, etc.).
    – Flashlights
    – Medications
  9. Don’t forget about your furry friends! Make sure your pets have the appropriate shelter they need during any winter weather, but especially any brutal temperatures and snow/ice. Also make sure they have access to fresh, unfrozen water.
  10. If you can, try to stay home during winter storms. We know that some may have to get out, though. So, if you do, make sure you are prepared. Here are some things to think about if you have to get out and brave the cold and piled up snow:

    – Make sure you have plenty of gas in your tank.
    – Take your cell phone and cell phone charger.
    – Make sure your scraper is in the vehicle and accessible.
    – Check your antifreeze.
    – Locate your jumper cables, just in case.
    – Pack some warm blankets.
    – Take a few snacks and some water.

If you happen to be home when a winter storm hits, be sure you are ready. Then, sit back, relax, and get cozy.
