We look forward to the Missouri State Fair every year! Get ready. The fair will be held August 8th-18th in Sedalia, MO!
Live music, countless vendors, livestock competitions, and of course, delicious food! Not only do we love sights, sounds (and smells) of the fair, but we also value what the fair stands for and how it celebrates Missouri’s agriculture industry.
The Beginning of the State Fair
Let me give you a quick history lesson. The first Missouri State Fair was held in 1901 in Sedalia, MO, the same place it is held today. People traveled from all corners of the state to show their livestock and enjoy a statewide harvest festival. (This took quite a while since some had to actually RIDE their animals to the fair!) Although a major drought brought added challenges and diminished they year’s harvest, the fair went on and a tradition was born!
There have been years when the MO State Fair thrived and years when it didn’t. To this day, the fair has been like a barometer of the state’s economic health as well as a living documentary of Missouri’s rich agricultural history.
The Fair Yesterday Vs. Today
As you can imagine, a few things have changed since that first state fair back in 1901. Today, the parking lot is lined with sleek trailers, roomy campers, and a variety of automobiles. Technology has transformed the way the events and competitions are held. And the entertainment just gets better and better each year!
A spirit of competition brings us together, just like it did back in the beginning, and keeps us coming back. Since the first state fair, the reward has been ribbons, premium money and recognition.
