Your Guide to a Tidy Yard

By in Selling Tips with 0 Comments

If you’re like us, warm weather often gives us the itch to get outside! It’s the perfect time of year to mow the grass, plant a garden, go on a walk, and just PLAY! In an effort to get our kids outside, many of us collect outdoor toys, games, and activities. Some of our kiddos may need a little encouragement to set down the controller and walk away from the TV.

Throughout the season, though, it’s common to let these outdoor toys collect in the yard. You’ve probably heard the response, “I’m not done playing with that,” when a child is asked to put something away. This battle can become even more stressful if you are trying to sell your home and are constantly working to keep your house looking tidy and “ready to show” at all times.

We know there just isn’t room to store EVERYTHING, so we’ve come up with a guide to help you know what needs to be put away and what can stay out when it comes time to show your house. We’re giving you two categories: Move it and Leave it. Say hello to “Your Guide to a Tidy Yard.”

Move it

Anything that is small and mobile should be put away if at all possible. These kinds of items make a yard look disheveled and can cause damage to the yard and/or grass if left out for an extended period of time.

if the toys were picked up and put away.
  • Toys
  • Bikes
  • Kites
  • Games
  • Frisbees
  • Balls
  • Mini swimming pool
  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Slip-n-slide, water toys

You might be thinking, “Where am I going to put all of this?” Check out this BLOG for some creative and EASY outdoor toy storage ideas.

*We know from experience that packing up and moving some of these items can be a major pain, so don’t be afraid to clean out the garage and get rid of some things that don’t need to make the move. Save yourself the headache now and later!

Leave it

Any item that is a permanent fixture in the yard can stay put. In fact, some of the items listed below can add visual and emotional appeal as they potential buyers the opportunity to visualize their own family playing in the yard. Although these items don’t need to be hidden and out of sight, they should be well-kept. Be sure the grass is mowed well near these items and none of them are overly dirty or significantly damaged. Just like you would stage your home, think of this as staging your yard. Make sure everything is in the right place, cleaned up, and looking good!

Very few of us have room to store a trampoline, so just do your best to make sure it’s in a good spot and everything is picked up around it.
  • Swing set
  • Tire swing
  • Sand box
  • Trampoline
  • Picnic table
  • Tree house
  • Slide
  • Hammock

*If any of these items have been sitting in your yard untouched for a quite awhile, or if there are any yard toys you don’t plan to bring with you when you move, now might be the time to sell, donate, or throw away some of these things.

Just because you’re trying to sell your home doesn’t mean you should be afraid to enjoy your yard. Get outside, enjoy your space, and let the kids play. That is what your home is for! Just remember to put away a few things on your way inside.
