Spring has sprung! With these longer days and warmer temperatures, now is the time to get outside and start tackling some projects before the fun (and heat!) of summer is upon us. So, dust off your work boots and get your supplies together, because we have some spring-time maintenance tips to help get your home and property in tip-top shape for the beautiful, warm days ahead.
Interior of the Home
☑️ General Spring Cleaning
A good deep cleaning session is always in order after a long winter of being inside the home. It’s time to start cleaning those areas that tend to get ignored at times. Now is a great time to move those couches and tables to get into all the nooks and crannies. It will feel so much better once you’re finished! Check out our blog post “Spring Cleaning Tips – Keeping It Fast and Efficient” to check out some easy and efficient spring cleaning tips.
☑️ Air Conditioning Unit
Let’s face it… When it comes time to turn on the air conditioner, you want it to work right then. Be sure to check and make sure everything is in working order before it comes time to actually need it. You’ll thank us later! 😉
☑️ Basement
Check your downstairs for any moisture. While this area is prone to be damp, you may need to consider running a dehumidifier. Check to make sure there are no cracks around the bottom of any concrete walls. Consider purchasing a sump pump if you do have any water build-up to help move the water out of your home.
Exterior of the Home
☑️ Roof
Winter storms and weather can take a toll on your roof. Take a walk around your home to inspect the roof. Pay attention to any shingles that may be missing or that have shifted. Look around to make sure things look right. If anything seems off, consider taking a closer look and calling a roofer to help get things back on track. Otherwise, you could face water damage, and that’s just not something homeowners want to deal with!
☑️ Foundation
After inspecting the top of the house, next, turn your attention to the bottom of your home. Check for any cracks and remove landscaping that may be too close to the foundation. Consider hiring a foundation specialist if needed to fill any cracks that could cause problems in the long run.
☑️ Windows
There are a couple of things to look out for with your windows, other than just simply washing them. First, check your screens. The screens help prevent pesky bugs from entering your home on those beautiful windows-open-spring days. If you need to, purchase a screen-repair kit to help seal off any potential entrance spots for bugs.
If you notice that there is airflow around your shut windows, check for any caulking or weather-stripping issues. Creating that tight seal is critical in preventing air escape (either in or out) and water issues.
☑️ Guttering and Down Spouts
Ensure your guttering is clear of debris so that water can drain properly. If not, it can cause wood rot and create a lot of damage to the structure of your house. Making sure your downspouts are in proper working order is important, too, as they help divert water away from your home, preventing it from pooling up and hurting your foundation.
Outdoors
☑️ Grill
Hopefully, at the end of summer, you were able to clean off the grease, dirt, and grime that tends to build up over time. If you skipped that step last fall, or if you continued to grill over the winter months (hey, it’s Missouri…there are days where that’s possible!), then check out this video for step-by-step instructions on how to deep clean your gas grill.
☑️ Lawn Mower and Lawn Care
It’s about that time again! If you haven’t already started mowing, and even if you have, take some time to show your lawnmower some TLC. Check the oil and always spray off the grass clippings. Getting any tune-ups in now will help once we’re in the thick of mowing season.
Be sure to rake the lawn to collect any debris, branches, or leaves that may have fallen over the winter. Not only can these suffocate your new grass, but they can also impact your lawnmower. Getting your yard all fixed up to start mowing will make for a smoother mowing experience…for you and your mower!
☑️ Deck, Patio, and Porch
With these areas, or any other outdoor structures, do a quick check for any damaged wood that may need to be replaced or repaired. You may just need to reseal the woodwork. Doing so will help give your woodwork extra life and stay in better condition.
☑️ Bugs
Spring brings us so much beauty and life, but part of that life also includes “creepy crawlies.” There are a few things you can to do help prevent them from overtaking areas of your home or property. First, check for any standing water around your home. Mosquitoes love to congregate around any kind of standing water, which could range from outdoor toys to feed troughs. Be sure to dump any water that is unused and add fresh water to the other spots.
Also, check for signs of termites around the home. They love the springtime, so be on the lookout. If you suspect any are making an appearance at your home, call in the professionals!
