6 Tips to Maximize your Kitchen Space

By in Home Improvement with 0 Comments

We’ve all heard at some point the saying “The kitchen is the heart of the home.” From family meals to snack time with the kids to unwinding after a long day, this special place in our homes is packed full of laughter and happy memories. If your kitchen space is on the smaller side, though, with limited counter and cabinet space (let’s be honest, do we ever really have enough counter space?), this happy place can start to feel messy and stressful. The good news is that with these 6 tips to help maximize your kitchen space, you will no longer be starved for the room you need. You’ll be back to happy cooking in no time!

1. Declutter Your Space

pantry items

From those dishes that you haven’t used in several years to the pantry items that have long expired, purging those unused and unwanted items will help increase your space. Leave no space untouched! From the top of your refrigerator to the cabinet under your sink, the most you can make of the space you have, the better it will feel.

We all have those stashes of items that can get out of control, whether it’s cups or bags from stores or food that has been pushed to the back and long forgotten. By donating, recycling, and throwing things away, you will gain some of your kitchen space back again.

2. Hang a Pegboard

If you have a bare wall, it’s a great spot to add a pegboard and can be a real space-saver! Add some hooks on there, and you have a place to store your pots and pans, canisters, and small baskets to hold those small items that are necessary but can make a counter look cluttered.

Pegboards can be plain or painted, and you can even add a hint of design while you’re at it. From adding a spot for succulents to herbs to small potted plants, this will help bring efficiency and aesthetics to your kitchen space.

3. Get Creative with Kitchen Corners

The corners of our kitchens are often wasted but can create a wealth of space when we get creative. Adding corner shelving brings this overlooked spot to life and gives it a purpose. It’s the perfect spot to store spices, frequently used dishes, or whatever else may come in handy.

Corner shelves are an inexpensive way to accomplish your goal of adding to the look and functionality when you have limited space.

4. Think Vertical

In a small area, adding vertical storage opportunities is a sure-fire method of increasing kitchen navigation, space, and efficiency. Consider adding hanging pots that tend to take up a lot of cabinet space. Plus, it can be a nice decorative touch!

Incorporating rods (think curtain rods) with hooks for your dish towels, oven mitts, small kitchen utensils, coffee mugs, and aprons is a nice way to contain and organize those items that just tend to take up space on our countertops and in our cabinets.

5. Cabinet Tops

The top of your kitchen cabinets is not just for holding dust! This real estate is perfect for storing those dishes that you break out for holidays and other special occasions or even extra kitchen supplies that aren’t needed on a daily basis. To avoid that area from becoming cluttered, buy some baskets to keep things looking neat and tidy.

6. Cabinet Doors

Obviously, cabinets are meant to store your kitchen items, but we can’t forget about the cabinet doors. The inside of our cabinet doors is a storage gold mine. All you have to do is install a small rod to hang your dish towels, pot holders, or aprons and hooks to store measuring spoons, pans, lids, and more. You can even install slim shelving to hold your seasonings. There are so many possibilities for this, so get creative!

Small kitchens don’t have to be a burden. By incorporating some of these tips, you can regain your peaceful haven and enjoy cooking up some sweet memories in the centerpiece of your home.
