Small bathrooms can be just as charming as the rest of the house. You can make a small space feel bigger with a few strategic design choices. The best part? You don’t have to tear down walls to make it happen! Check out these 6 steps to make a small bathroom feel bigger.
**No demolition required!**
#1 Brighten the room.
There are many ways to maximize light within a space. Your goal is to accentuate the light you have, then add more! Lighter spaces tend to feel more spacious than dark ones.
Brighten a small bathroom with:
- Paint – Keep the walls and ceilings the same light color. Using multiple colors chops up the space and draws a line between the walls and ceilings.
- Sheer window coverings – Let as much light in as you can while maintaining privacy.
- Light fixtures – Can lights and wall mount light fixtures are great options that take up minimal space.
- A large mirror – Large mirrors trick the eye into thinking a space is larger than it is.
- Light flooring – A dark floor will work against your bright colored walls and ceiling. To truly open up the space, stick with light colored flooring, as well.
#2 Eliminate clutter.
One way to keep a small space open is by limiting the amount of “stuff” in there. Go beyond just keeping it clean. Only put things in there that are absolutely necessary! If an item can be stored somewhere else, find it a home elsewhere.
Although bath mats fall into the “necessary” category, keeping them hidden while they’re not in use makes your floor look larger and less cluttered.
#3 Raise the shower curtain.
Take your shower rod and hang it as close to the ceiling as you can get it. Hanging a shower curtain from the ceiling all the way to the floor creates a beautiful vertical line, drawing the eyes upward. This vertical element establishes the illusion of a larger space.
#4 Install a sliding door.
Swinging doors can quickly encroach on the already small space of a tight bathroom. Eliminate that cramped feeling by swapping out the swinging door for a sliding door. A sliding barn door or a pocket door are great options!
#5 Opt for a pedestal sink.
Pedestal sinks save so much floor and wall space compared to a bulky vanity. But what about all of that precious storage? Try utilizing wall mount shelves or cabinets for those toiletries and bathroom accessories.
Shop pedestal sinks at Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Menards.
#6 Open up the space with clear glass.
Using clear glass elements allows light to pass from one end of the room to the other, opening up the space. One of the most important glass elements is the shower door. You want the shower to feel like an extension of the same room, not a separate space.
