When you hear the word “layers,” what comes to mind? That thing you do when you have those cool mornings and warm afternoons? (One of life’s conundrums when living in the Ozarks!) But, what about layers of light? Many homeowners in Southwest Missouri are in the dark when it comes to layering light in their homes. Keep reading to find out how to brighten each room in your home and stand out in the real estate market.
Primary Lighting
Most rooms have a primary source of light. This is usually one of the first things you pick out. We’re talking about your light fixture, ceiling fan, can lighting: The brightest light in the room. One thing to consider when choosing your central light is which color temperature you prefer: warm or cool. Warm lighting produces a yellowish glow and a cozy atmosphere. Cool lighting produces a whiter glow that boosts productivity. One great strategy is to choose a warmth that mimics natural sunlight shining into the room. Any light fixture can produce warm or cool light with a simple switch of the bulb.
Accent Lighting
After you have a primary source of light, take a look at the room with the light on. Are there dark corners? Are there areas of the room you want to draw attention to? This is where your accent lighting comes into play. Secondary lighting could come from wall sconces, can lights on a dimmer, or lamps strategically placed around the room. Your accent lighting should be dimmer than the primary light to produce a calming effect.
Focused Lighting
Now take another step back and pinpoint the areas of the room that will be used for specific tasks. Is there a chair for reading? A mirror for getting ready in the morning? A desk for working at home? These areas require direct light with focused illumination. Think about placing a desk lamp, floor lamp, or pendant light that can be turned on as needed.
