It’s that time of year when the leaves are beginning to change and blanket the ground in various shades of fall-time colors. It really is one of the most beautiful times of the year! With these changing colors, there is no better time to spruce up the exterior of your home and truly capitalize on the beauty of this change of seasons. Check out these six things you can do to enhance the curb appeal of your home this autumn.
✅ Trim, Prune & Rake
Sounds like a lot of fun, huh? We get it. It’s not what everyone looks forward to, but it is a very important item on your fall-is-here task list. Shrubs, bushes, some trees, etc., can start to look rough during the colder months if you’re not careful. Be sure to remove any dead branches at the base of shrubs and trim back stems. If you have any trees with damaged, dead, or simply broken branches, remove those during this time of year. And when the leaves start to blanket the ground, be sure to rake them up, bag them, and remove them from your grass. This will help prevent your grass from smothering under the packed foliage.
✅ Focus on the Exterior of the Home
Once fall rolls around, we lose the leaves on our trees and our lush green grass, so your home becomes a true focal point to passers-by (and potential buyers). Be sure to focus your attention on the exterior of your home to get it all cleaned up. Consider washing the siding of your home, as well as power washing any sidewalks and driveways. If you notice any paint chipping away or areas that may need some touching up, it may be time to add a fresh coat of paint or stain to really spruce up your place.
Don’t forget about washing your windows! After dry summer months, dust can congregate on your windows, so now is the time to clean those off.
✅ Clear the Gutters
With any rain and falling leaves and debris, your gutters are susceptible to problems, and that makes your house susceptible to even more problems. Be sure you are cleaning out your gutters regularly. If you don’t, then your house could suffer from water damage.
✅ Plant Fall Flowers
After you clean out your flower beds, consider adding some pops of color with some fresh fall flowers that are hardy in cooler temperatures. There are actually many to choose from, including mums, pansies, etc. You can also add potted flowers around your home if you don’t want to add to your flower beds.
Don’t forget to add mulch to different areas of the yard, including around your trees. This addition can help protect your trees from cold temperatures. It also adds a nice, fresh, manicured look to your landscape.
✅ Improve Outdoor Lighting
The first step to improving your outdoor lighting is to simply clean all fixtures. Over the summer, things get dusty and full of cobwebs and dead bugs. Yuck! If you can either wash them off or simply wipe them down, you’ll have the glass sparkling again in no time!
Another idea to consider is to add lighting. With days getting shorter, your walkway may need a little illumination. You can do this by adding decorative lanterns, floodlights, solar walkway lights, etc., to brighten up the outdoors.
✅ Add Decorations
Now for the fun part! If you love all things pumpkins, gourds, and hay bales, then now is your time to shine! However, while it is tempting to go all out, try to rein in the over-the-top decorations so that it doesn’t become too busy and cluttered. If you are trying to sell, potential buyers won’t want to have to follow a maze to get inside your home. Keep it simple but classy.
