With a new year comes new trends. It’s always fun to see the shifts in design from year to year. Sometimes a fresh start is just what we need to refresh our home and ourselves. While there are different directions one can go in, there was a common theme in many designers’ predictions for the new year: people will want both beauty and functionality. If you’re looking to do a home makeover, maybe some of these ideas will help inspire you!
1. Home Offices
We all found out the importance of home offices a little while back. While we like to look forward to the future, for many people, home offices are now a staple. Whether it’s for adults to work or kids to do homework, this is a trend that may be around for a while.
When working on your home office, consider making it as functional as possible. Some things to think about include strong Wifi connections, several outlets to plug in all the necessary technology, dry erase boards to make notes, etc. Also, work on getting this space organized and tidy. These two things alone can go a long way!
Making this space both beautiful and functional will not only help the aesthetics of your home but will also help make the process of working from home (if needed) a better experience.
2. Incorporating Tradition
For those of you who like to go antiquing, this could be your year! Some experts believe that antiques will play a large role in home decor this year. Adding pieces with some history adds to the nostalgia of your home. Win-win if the older pieces have sentimental value… This resurgence of vintage items brings style and sustainability to your home. Plus, with a shortage of materials, it can be difficult to order new items nowadays and get them in a timely manner. Consider adding some pieces to your home that have history.
3. Calming Environments
Now more than ever, we understand and appreciate the importance of the great outdoors. So, why not bring a small piece of that into our homes? This year, some predict that people will focus more on natural lighting and bringing in elements of nature, such as plants and flowers.
Some also say that while neutrals are not going anywhere, we may see bold colors and prints being added to the mix. These prints and textures that can accentuate our homes may resemble nature in some way to really connect with the outdoors and bring personality and fun to our environments. These healing and soothing additions may just be the pick-me-up we need in our homes.
4. Outdoor Living
As we mentioned above, the outside became a place of refuge for many over the last couple of years. With people spending more and more time outdoors, many are focusing on this outside space and making it the best extension of their home as possible. From adding new stylish outdoor furniture to working on the landscaping, this is the year to improve and expand your outdoor living and entertaining area.
Consider planting some additional trees and shrubs, building a fire pit, or just making a note to spend some more time in the great outdoors. It will refresh your body and mind!
5. Mindful and Multifunctional Spaces
If your New Year’s resolution was to unwind and destress more this year, you are not alone! Many designers predict that the need for peace and low stress will impact home decor choices. Be aware of how your space makes you feel. If it’s cluttered, focus on cleaning the space out. Add touches that appeal to your personality, such as your interests and hobbies. Love artwork? Add some prints to your walls. Love bicycling? Add something related to cycling in your home. Your home is your safe haven, so it’s time to connect to it and add decor that really means something to you.
While making your home personal to you, it’s okay to make your spaces multifunctional as well. Get creative on how your space is used in your home. Your office can also serve as a workout space. Just be sure to clean up when finished. If you don’t have a room in your home for an office, you can have a small area in your family room dedicated to work. Add a small desk or table, add a few personal touches, and you’ll have your work area up and running in no time.
