Fireplace Safety Tips: Staying Warm, Toasty, & Safe

By in Holiday Blog with 0 Comments

It’s getting to be that time of year – the time when you get to enjoy your fuzzy socks, a cup of hot cocoa, and the fire crackling in the background. On these chilly days, nothing beats curling up next to the fireplace to warm up and enjoy some downtime.

While fireplaces are a commonly sought-after feature in homes, when it comes time to actually use it, it’s imperative to do so safely.  Depending on the type of fireplace you have, there are a few things that you can do to help ensure you and your family are warm and toasty…and, most importantly, safe.

With any type of fireplace, this is one of the most important maintenance tips you can do to ensure your safety: have your fireplace and chimney inspected. Having a seasoned professional come take a look at your fireplace and chimney (if applicable) every year should be at the top of your fall or winter to-do list.

While preparing for it to be inspected, make sure you clear the area of any flammable items. Be extra careful around the holidays when you may have stockings, garlands, or other decor close to the mantle. Avoid getting any objects too close to the open flame.

Here are a few tips for the different types of fireplaces:

🔥 Wood Burning Fireplace

  • It’s best to avoid using freshly cut wood. Recently cut wood tends to contain a lot of moisture, which can be difficult to burn and cause too much smoke to emanate from the fireplace. Instead, use seasoned, dry wood.
  • Clean out any leftover ashes that may be lingering from last season.
  • Consider having a gate or barrier of some kind to help prevent little ones from getting too close.
  • Opt for a slow burn. While a large fire may look impressive and cozy, it’s safer to burn at a slow, steady pace. If the fire is too big or too hot, it can damage your chimney.
  • Never use gasoline or kerosene when lighting the fire, and never leave the fire in your fireplace unattended!

🔥 Gas Fireplace

  • Make sure you have proper ventilation, including the flue and vents.
  • Invest in a quality carbon monoxide detector.
  • Pay attention to the clearance zone on your fireplace. Keep any items away that could be flammable or easily damaged.
  • Keep your safety screen in great condition. This will help prevent any flames or burning material from escaping the fireplace.

🔥 Electric Fireplace

  • While the flame may not be real, there is still an abundance of heat being produced by electric fireplaces. It’s important to use caution and not get too close.
  • Use the appropriate cords with your electric fireplace. Avoid using extension cords. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on best practices. Also, never used a damaged cord!
  • Consider unplugging the unit when not in use.
  • Avoid blocking the fresh air intake or the hot air vents.
