The 2010’s have come to a close. We say goodbye to the decade known for its Hipster fashion, Instagram, Taylor Swift, Netflix, and online dating. As far as home design goes, Chip and Joanna Gaines dominated with the all-white kitchen, granite countertops, shiplap everything, and gray wall color. Now as we welcome a new year, a new decade, we look forward to exciting new home design trends. Say hello to the trends of 2020 home design!
This is the decade to BE BOLD. Take risks with your home design. “Small house or big, rich or poor- own the space you live in and love what you have.”
Joanna Gaines
Bold Ceilings.
Have you thought about taking advantage of that “fifth wall” to expand your design space? In 2020 we’ll see materials from wallpaper to paint to tented fabric used to create unique ceiling designs. You will start seeing this trend pop up in editorial magazines like Architectural Digest and Elle Decor before it makes its way into the everyday home.
Bold Paint Colors.
The 2020 Pantone Color of the Year is “Classic Blue,” a beautiful shade of navy. The days of light gray walls are coming to a close as many people are embracing more vibrant colors. Jewel tones like Cobalt Blue, Kelly Green or Eggplant are on their way in along with warmer Earth tones. Get ready to see entire rooms bathed in these rich tones as we’re also saying goodbye to the accent wall.
Bold Doors.
Raise your hand if you have white doors with white trim in your home. Many of us picked up a can of white paint in order to keep up with this trend over the past few years. In 2020, we can expect people to branch out by painting their doors and trim darker, complementary colors. A painted door will allow you to accomplish that monochromatic color scheme popular in 2020 home design.
Bold Wallpaper.
Although styles have changed, wallpaper has lasted the test of time. From Victorian to arts and crafts freize, wallpaper was popular for the first 35 or so years of the 20th century. With the start of a new decade, wallpaper is making a comeback! Designers are incorporating bold prints and floral patterns time-tested medium. Bold Bathroom Design.
Since bathrooms are one of the smallest functional spaces in the home, they make for a great place to experiment and have fun with design. Go for an adventurous wall color, a funky floor covering, or an audacious wallpaper. This is also a great space to mix and match modern and vintage fixtures and pieces.
Bold Cabinets.
The white cabinets of the 2010’s have given us the perfect blank canvas to bring a pop of color into the kitchen! Remember what we said about bold paint colors? Well the same goes for kitchen cabinets. Look for colors like dark red, bright yellow, emerald green, and navy blue in kitchens near you.
