Awkwardly packing people into small spaces can be a theme for the large crowds that gather for Thanksgiving. Some years you’ve got to cram the kid table in the hallway or watch Grandpa drip gravy as he eats on your couch. Many homes aren’t designed to host a large number of people at one time. If you’re looking at your living space and wondering how you’re going to fit everyone on Turkey Day, have no fear. Here are some helpful hints to comfortably (and creatively) fit the whole gang in the space you have.
Repurpose & Rearrange
For now, move the stylish furniture and focus on what’s functional. Floor lamps and decor may need to be moved out of the way to make room for additional tables and seating. Get creative! Repurpose desks, dressers, and end tables with extra seating to create a cozy restaurant-style environment. All of your guests don’t have to be at the same table or even in the same room!
Find a Bench
If you’re trying to squeeze a few more guests around the table, switch out your chairs for a bench. It may not be the most preferred seating, but it will allow you to make the most of the table space you have without leaving anyone out.
Go Diagonal
For large tables, reposition them so they are diagonal in the room. The open space will prevent guests from feeling squeezed into a corner or squished against a wall, especially if people are getting up for seconds! You can add smaller tables to the end if a few extra seats are needed and the space allows.
Take the Party Outside
If the weather is nice, don’t be afraid to host your guests outdoors. Put a nice long table in the yard, or have some activities out there to entertain your guests so they don’t all congregate in the same space. Spreading out will help manage the space, the noise level AND the temperature in your home.
